In March this year, the United States released its national strategy for conservation planning in the face of climate change. The first goal of the National Fish, Wildlife and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy is to "conserve habitat to support healthy fish, wildlife, and plant populations and ecosystem functions in a changing climate". It warns that by prioritizing certain species and areas over others, there will be winners and losers. Elsewhere in the conservation community, there is increasing acceptance of abandoning protection for many of the species, populations and ecosystems that are most at risk of extinction from climate change~1.
