A lonely rat is an anxious rat. Place a female Norway rat in lifelong solitary confinement, and her odds of developing a malignant breast tumour more than triple7. Pgt a happy rat on her own, and you raise her risk of breast cancer-or, if the animal is already afflicted, you reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy. There is evidence linking this observation to hormone levels: at least two months before tumour development, the rat's reaction to the stress hormone corticosterone changes.
