Our understanding of fungal diversity is coloured by the forms that can be grown in culture - filamentous or yeast-like forms with chitinous outer coats. Jones et al. have isolated and characterized what seems to be an extensive radiation of primitive, fungus-like organisms that lack chitin coats. Dubbed the cryptomycota, these organisms were first isolated from a pond at the University of Exeter, UK, and are probably widespread.
