Genes on the X chromosome may play an unappreciated role in cancer, say researchers in the United States. Daniel Haber of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and his colleagues studied tumours from patients with a kidney cancer called Wilms' tumour. They identified a new gene, WTX, on the X chromosome, which was missing or faulty in a third of the tumours tested.
