SIR — For many years, meteorologists using sensitive research radars have observed widespread echoes in precipitation-free areas of the diurnal atmosphere. Although the source of these clear-air echoes has been controversial, recent studies have demonstrated that they are attributable to weakly flying insects that drift with the wind. Such insects, whose dispersal in the atmosphere is governed largely by the wind, have been referred to collectively as the "aerial plankton".
