The initial hype told us that cloud computing (whatever that is to you-there are many definitions, all involving running IT over the Internet in some manner) would take over the world. Now, reality is setting in, and it's not often pretty. Consider, for example, the sad tale of The Linkup, previously known as Streamload's MediaMax; Streamload's board split the company in two in June 2007, turning its consumer business into the ill-fated MediaMax. In early August of this year, the online storage service shut down after irretrievably losing almost half of its customer data during a disastrous attempt to switch from its old MediaMax systems to the new Linkup. There were later claims that the data, isn't exactly lost, just inaccessible, which amounts to the same thing for frustrated customers.
