The late decay, if not collapse, of the information and service industry stock markets has brought back into light the benefits and glamour of the "hard industries" as celebrated by Eamonn Fingleton in his 1999 book In Praise of Hard Industries: Why Manufacturing, Not the Information Economy, is the Key to Future Prosperity. Talking of the nonwo-vens and absorbent hygiene products industries as hard industries is only apparently a paradox. Fingleton's definition of the latter as "capital intensive, technically sophisticated forms of manufacturing" perfectly fits the reality of nonwovens production as well as most nonwovens converting operations.
