The Piper Alpha disaster of 1988 urged the re-evaluation of the industry's approach to enhance safety regime in the North Sea, which enforced UK legislation to include sufficient resources to ensure the safe evacuation of personnel to a safe place. A range of methods were suggested to get people to a place of safety, to deal with evacuations, escape, and recovery through helicopters, lifeboats, and cranes so as to develop an understanding of efficiency and limitations.
