Any of us involved in the industry will know that packaging can delight and fascinate or, on the other hand, make the blood boil. Indeed, it is a testament to the huge importance of packaging as not only a commercial issue but a social one that it attracts such constant attention from ministers and legislators as well as the general public. This month's sincere praise for the sector in general-and for the Spanish corrugated group Saica's huge investment in its Partington paper mill in particular- from the Business and Energy Minister, Michael Fallon, was one prime example of how packaging can fascinate (see page 3). I was lucky enough to join Fallon's entourage on his tour of the mill; he concluded he was "proud" to have the facility here in the UK. There are few more impressive sights in packaging manufacturing than apaper mill running at full pe nevertheless, his comments should encourage anyone who thinks the sector gets a rough ride from politicians.
