A plastic crack model for smectic A liquid crystals is suggested in this article. The solution for the crack problem is based on the dislocation pile-up principle and the singular integral equation method. From the solution we can determine the size of the plastic zone at the crack tip and the crack tip opening (sliding) displacement, which are parameters relevant to the stability/instability of materials. The results may be useful in developing soft-matter mechanics.View full textDownload full textKeywordssmectics A, edge dislocation, dislocation pile-up, plastic crack, local instabilityRelated var addthis_config = { ui_cobrand: "Taylor & Francis Online", services_compact: "citeulike, netvibes, twitter, technorati, delicious, linkedin, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, google, more", pubid: "ra-4dff56cd6bb1830b" }; Add to shortlist Link Permalink http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/09500839.2011.641510
