Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is becoming a reality sooner than many energy utilities expected even though it is not a new concept. AMI takes Automated Meter Reading (AMR) to a new level. Going beyond AMR's ability to gather residential consumption and billing data remotely from a vehicle, AMI employs network communications to gather real-time data about usage patterns and then transmits the data to a host computer for further processing and analysis. As is the case with many technologies, AMI is building on its own momentum, fueled much of the time by external forces. Why is AMI suddenly a hot topic? This article takes a high-level look at the major factors contributing to the deployment of AMI, including the Energy Policy Act of 2005, maturing technology and financial incentives.
