Dutch-German power grid operator Tennet has awarded the SuedOstLink high-voltage line construction contract in Germany to Italy’s Prysmian, Prysmian said May 5. The 525 kV, 250-km direct current cable is to run from Saxony- Anhalt in northeast Germany to Bavaria in the south and is considered a vital “power highway” shipping surplus wind power north to south. “Worth approximately Eur500 million ($543 million) depending on options, Prysmian is to design, manufacture, supply, lay, joint, test and commission a 2 GW underground cable system through the Tennet region of this first German Corridor,” Prysmian said. Project completion is planned for early 2026. Tennet is currently consulting on plans to invest between Eur7.8 billion-Eur8.7 billion on its onshore network between 2020 and 2029. It plans to spend an additional Eur6 billion-Eur7.2 billion on its offshore grid over the same period. A consultation on these plans is underway and runs to May 28. The lion’s share of Tennet’s onshore investments are focused on mitigation of grid congestion, as is the case for the SuedOstLink .
