Expected strong growth in Norway’s economy ought not to be allowed to damage the climate through increased CO2 emissions, new Labor party leader Jonas Gahr Stoere said June 15 at the party’s national congress. Growth should be politically regulated, said Stoere, in order to control emissions. “Norway cannot [solve the climate problem] simply by purchasing CO2 quotas,” he said. “We must scrap the disputes about climate versus jobs. An offensive climate policy, and greater opportunities for industry, go hand in hand,” he said. Gahr Stoere was elected as leader of the party – Norway’s largest – at the week-end congress. He was the only candidate. He follows Jens Stoltenberg, prime minister in the old red-green coalition The coalition was defeated in last September’s elections, and Stoltenberg has since been appointed head of NATO. Norway is currently governed by a minority, two-party coalition of the Conservative and Progress Party.
