The aim of this project was to compare the critical thinking ability and diagnostic reasoning of podiatry students. The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal was used to measure critical thinking. Diagnostic reasoning skills were determined as part of an oral examination. Content knowledge was taken from a multiple-choice examination. No correlation was found between critical thinking ability and diagnostic reasoning (r = 0.03; p = 0.84). After controlling for content knowledge, critical thinking ability accounted for 40% of the variation in diagnostic reasoning ability (p < 0.001). This emphasises the importance of the development of critical thinking skills in undergraduate students to develop their diagnostic reasoning ability.
