Prices in the balancing mechanism (BM) are set to become spikier following Ofgem's decision to provisionally approve a rule change to the way they are set. Despite vehement industry opposition, Ofgem has provisionally approved a modification (P194) to the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC) put forward last summer by National Grid (see PUK 139). The modification will change the price setting mechanism to better signal energy scarcity in times of system stress - which will effectively mean that prices will be higher in the BM in future when the plant margin falls.
