Lately, a new breed of designers has emerged who have decided to make font creation-not just lettering-an essential part of their process. After all, why stop at modifying a few glyphs when you can build an entire typeface? In fact, this is the question I ask myself during those sleepless nights when I'm kerning a whole typeface for a project that actually requires no more than a few glyphs. Is it out of passion? Is it madness? Or is it simply because we are more educated on the subject of designing fonts now, and because the tools to produce them are getting better and better, so it's just easier and faster to do? To answer these questions, I took the opportunity to ask several other designers why they feel compelled to create bespoke typefaces.
