Apex was simultaneously uplifting and depressing. The major suppliers of equipment and processes to the assembly industry went all out to display and demonstrate their latest developments. The number of exhibitors substantially exceeded last year's show. However, atten-dance met neither expectations nor hopes, dropping about 30% from last year. This year's events certainly demonstrated the desirability of investigating the synergy as well as the economic benefit of co-locating Apex with IPC Printed Circuits Expo at some future date. On one hand, it could be argued that the recession was totally at fault for the disappointing turnout. I believe, however, that the EMS and OEM companies that depend upon the suppliers' latest innovations and improvements to compete missed a major opportunity to prepare themselves for the upturn that will surely come. The squeezed budgets that prevented engineers and managers from meeting with la creme de la creme of the equipment and test world, to attend the workshops and technical sessions, and to network, may damage their ability to compete in 2003 and beyond.
