摘要

As Someone Based in Europe and working in an industry impacted directly by the proliferation of environmental legislation, it was interesting to read Jason Linnell's recent Green Thoughts column (PC FAB, December 2001). It is good to see the mutual appreciation of the challenges legislation such as the WEEE directive presents to European board makers and, moreover, companies supplying electronics to Europe. The WEEE (Waste from Electronic and Electrical Equipment) and RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directives are certainly two of the main pieces of legislation of concern. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones: Indeed, many other bills are also having an impact on the competitiveness of the European PCB industry. Most of this legislation starts out with good intentions - enhancing the environment and minimizing our impact on it - and most of us would agree with the aims. Unfortunately, it is with the implementation and in particular with the functional details that problems for industry arise.
