Experimental treatments for Alzheimer's disease aim to reduce the amount of amyloid protein, which riddles patients' brains and robs them of cognitive ability. Neha Sehgal et al. (pp. 3510-3515) used mouse models of Alzheimer's disease to test the therapeutic potential of a plant called Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), used in Ayurvedic medicine for its memory-boosting properties. The authors treated the mice for 30 days with oral doses of extracts from the plant's root, which contains steroidal compounds, and monitored the progression of the disease.
