摘要

The size to which a cell can grow is not randomly determined. For example, bacteria increase their size as nutrients become more abundant until they reach a maximum size (1). To accomplish this size change, bacteria sense nutrients to regulate metabolism, coordinate the rate of mass increase with division, and adjust the biogenesis of their envelope. Here we show that in the bacterium Escherichia coli defects in fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis decrease cell size and compromise the regulation of size in response to nutrients.
