摘要

Multicellular development is a trait often associated with eukaryotes, but it has become apparent in recent years that many, if not most bacterial species have the capacity for multicellular development when they reside in an appropriate natural environment. Bacterial development yields a remarkable array of complex multicellular forms. Some forms of multicellularity are ecologically important, such as the nitrogen-fixing heterocysts produced by certain species of photosynthetic cyanobacteria. Other forms of multicellularity are medically important, such as the pathogenic biofilms produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
