摘要

Chemical interactions are the foundation of biological life, shaping how cells develop, thrive, and interact with other organisms. Many biological systems, including bacteria, develop characteristic physiological and physical features (in other words, differentiate into cell types) in response to chemical cues from their environment. Such cues may include molecules secreted by other nearby cells (1, 2). However, few studies have examined explicitly how such chemical interactions alter development into different cell types in bacteria. We explored this question by examining how other organisms influence development in the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. We focused on its differentiation into a cell type called a "matrix-producing cannibal."
