The trailer and container shortage that hamstrung railroads and their intermodal customers in late fall/early winter has eased considerably. Railroads have stepped it up on the equipment-acquisition front, and most of what they've bought is the 53-foot variety. For example, in September, Norfolk Southern Corp. began taking delivery of 5,000 53-foot containers. "We will be receiving this equipment through the end of 2000 with part of this fleet being assigned to the EMP pool," says Ryan Houfek, NS's group manager, marketing, planning.
