The Philippine Social Science Council, in partnership with the University of the Philippines, hosted the annual Violet Wurfei ASEAN Lecture on 14 March 2007 at the PSSCenter. Dr. Kasian Tejapira of Thammasat University, the special guest lecturer, spoke on the topic "Ethnic Conflict in Southern Thailand." Dr. Tejapira provided a brief history of the separatist insurgency that has plagued Southern Thailand and examined the root causes of the conflict. He also discussed the implications of President Thaksin's normalization policy and current efforts of General Boonyaratglin to resolve violence in the area and attain lasting peace. Serving as discussants were Dr. Cynthia Luz Rivera of the University of Santo Tomas' Center for Intercultural Studies and Prof. Aileen Toohey of the International Peace Studies Program jointly being undertaken by the University of Peace System of Costa Rica and the Ateneo de Manila University.
