摘要

Drivers usually represent the largest group of employees within a transport undertaking. During service, drivers endure multiple physical and mental pressures. These result in heavy strain, absenteeism due to illness and, in many cases, early unsuitability for driver duty. For the transport undertakings and staff concerned, organisational, economic and social problems are the result. EU Directive 89/391/EEC, which has been transposed into the national laws of European Union Member States, obliges operators to take steps to prevent workplace accidents and dangers to health caused by work, and to organise work in a way that does not place unreasonable demands on staff. Transport undertakings therefore face an obligation to alleviate the strains on working drivers by means of organisational and technical measures. One vital technical measure concerns the ergonomic design of the driver work station.
