After stoppages and cuts in output at numerous pulping-wood converting and graphic paper-producing businesses in June, July, and August, production activity picked up again to some extent when September came around. There were at least no further significant paper machine stoppages of several days during the course of September. Nevertheless, some graphic paper manufacturers still failed to achieve full utilisation of their production capacity in September. The usual seasonal upswing expected in production activity for September did not occur on the familiar scale of previous years. Although graphic paper manufacturers are anticipating higher demand for leaflets and newspaper supplements in the run-up to Christmas trade in the coming weeks, as far as is known at the moment, the upswing will not be sufficient to compensate for the lower output registered in the first eight months of this year.
