"2012 was a year of ups and downs for the German recovered paper industry. Demand was satisfactory in the first half of the year and companies reported earnings at economically viable levels. As of summer, however, order levels of the paper industry deteriorated in the wake of an economic downturn. As a result, mills produced less paper and consequently required less recovered paper. Orders dropped not only from producers in Germany but from producers in Asia as well. This, in turn, caused a drop in prices for recovered paper," Reinhold Schmidt, vice president of bvse, the German Federal Association of Secondary Raw Materials and Waste Management, and chairman of the association's Division for Paper Recycling, said in a review of last year.
