It was when I visited Multiplex in Germany in the summer of last year that I noticed one of the display Mentor models flying with flaps. For those of you who are not familiar, the Mentor is described as a 65" span (.40-size) electric trainer moulded in very durable Elapor~R and can be optionally fitted with a supplied aero-tow release if needed, utilising an additional servo. Demonstrations of it flying using the aero-tow were very positive as it hauled a Cularis into the sky with no trouble, and the aerobtic performance of this so called trainer is more than suitable for advanced flyers also. The flapped version amazed me to see a 'trainer' take off at such a slow speed and climb almost vertically, only to level off still over the flying strip at a good height. Similarly, when doing slow fly-pasts the deployment of flap slowed the Mentor down considerably, almost to walking pace, but still maintained height.
