From the first appearance of Mary Shelley's novel in 1818 to the ballet adaptation by Liam Scarlet in 2016, Frankenstein has proved to be an enduring cultural phenomenon. This new addition to the Cambridge Companion to Literature series is an economical and elegantly constructed introduction to this text - along with Bram Stoker's Dracula, the most familiar and influential in nineteenth-century Gothic literature - and its various and still-evolving contexts and transformations. The editor, Reader in English at Sheffield University in the UK, intends the book to be "both a guide to the novel and an act of cultural analysis" (p.9). Broad, then, in its ambition, it is a pleasure to say that Smith's endeavour has been almost entirely successful.
