摘要

The decision by Cambridge University in 1960 to drop Latin as a compulsory entrance requirement was expected to result in a decline in the teaching of the subject in schools throughout England and Wales. As if to underline this belief and despite protests at the time from leading academics, Oxford University followed the example of Cambridge a year later. However, the number of candidates presenting themselves as candidates for school examinations in Greek and Latin suggests that, far from declining, the subjects are increasingly popular elements of the current school curriculum. Thus, examining boards in England Wales report that, in 2015, some 13,000 candidates took Latin as a GCSE subject and a further 1,350 at A level, whereas some 1,300 sat Ancient Greek at GCSE level with 250 at A level. Similarly, viewing figures for television programmes covering a range of aspects dealing with the cultural legacies of the Greek and Roman civilizations, in particular those produced by the BBC in the UK for its BBC 4 channel, shows a healthy public interest in the subject. Indeed, as a result of such programmes, Professor Mary Beard of Cambridge University has become something of a celebrity in her own right and may be congratulated for helping to demolish the "dry as dust" image which these subjects had entailed for many years.
