The author describes this as a work which took over ten years of intense study and, where, he on numerous occasions felt he might give up, pending the invention of suitable software to do the hard labour for him. He did not, and the result is indeed a labour of love, giving a comprehensive guide to the original pronunciation (OP) of Shakespeare's language, attempting to distil from all the words in the First Folio, the probable pronunciation of the time, thus enabling productions of the plays to be as authentic as possible in this respect, should directors so wish. David Crystal is well-qualified to undertake such a work, having wide experience as a scholar, lecturer and writer on many aspects both of Shakespeare's work and other works about language and linguistics.
