摘要

There has been no comprehensive biographical dictionary of the Royal Navy since 1849, and the author of the present work, himself a retired naval officer, has spent the last ten years in filling the gap for the period 1900-2000. He calculates that during that time, 250,000 officers in total have served in the Navy; it being impracticable to cover all of them, he intends to include, in a series of six volumes, all officers down to and including the rank of Commander, with a selection of those of lower rank. This first volume covers 336 full Admirals or Admirals of the Fleet (including those few, all of royal birth, granted honorary, or as the CD-ROM curiously expresses it "honoury", rank). The biographical data, amounting to 600,000 words, has been included in the CD-ROM, while the general explanatory material appears as a printed book. This expedient was no doubt adopted in order to keep the price within bounds.
