I must admit that although my father was of Bengali origin - from a Hindu family in the Mymensingh district of what is now Bangladesh - he came to England as a student in 1938, joined the Royal Air Force at the outbreak of war and never went back. His relations fled to Calcutta (as it then was) in 1947 with just what they could carry, so he never could return to his ancestral home. I was born in London, never learned more than two or three words of Bengali and have only briefly visited my innumerable relations there. I am therefore writing this review as an informed outsider rather than as the expert insider.
