Greek tragedy first emerged in ancient Greece in the late-sixth century BCE and quickly flourished to become one of the most important and celebrated dramatic genres of the fifth century BCE. Today, ＞ 2500 years later, the continued influence of Greek tragedy on Western civilization and culture is undeniable and the survival of the tragedies and continued performance of the plays in contemporary theatre is a testament to the power and influence of the genre. Yet despite the far-reaching influence of Greek tragedy, it remains a complex genre which often requires detailed knowledge of the political, social and cultural context in which the plays were originally performed to be fully understood.
