摘要

This is the sixth contribution to the Historical Dictionaries of Professions and Industries series which has so far encompassed such unlikely bedfellows as Japanese business, the fashion, petroleum and US maritime industries and journalism. Author Mary Ellen Quinn is a library professional with experience in the public sector, but is probably best known to many readers of this review as the longstanding editor, until 2011, of the Reference Books Bulletin section of the American Library Association's Booklist. Attempting reference coverage of library history within the confines of a single volume is a challenging task, and Quinn sensibly sets out in her Reader's Notes that "(T)he focus of this dictionary is on librarianship as a modern, organized profession" mainly from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. She also notes: "(A)lthough an attempt has been made to cover librarianship across the globe, the dictionary has an Anglo-American bias" [. . .] "(B)iographical coverage is representative rather than comprehensive" (p. ⅹⅰ).
