摘要

The picture book is a unique genre of literature. At its best, a picture book is an integrated work which relies on reader engagement through touch, sight, and sound. It differs from the illustrated book by merit of the function of its visuals. In an illustrated work the art enhances the story but the story can function without the illustrations or can function equally well re-interpreted by various illustrators in various editions. However, in a picture book the artwork as well as the physical properties and design - the shape, texture, and size of the pages and the covers - act in concert with the text as essential aspects of the aesthetics of the reader's/ listener's experience. As with poetry, a picture book is intended to be heard. Finally, the picture book has a dual audience - the adult who is reading the book aloud and the child to whom she is reading. "Picture books, more than any other kind of children's literature, are read and appreciated by children and adults together [...] a clever picture book takes into consideration the dual audience, offering both parties something to appreciate and enjoy" (Nikolajeva, 2006). In Picture Books for Children, Northrup offers a resource for the adult reader and provides a guide to the "best children's picture books for use in the classroom, library, or home" (p. ix).
