With the growing importance nowadays of Latin American studies as a taught module within university degree courses, this volume will surely be welcomed by teaching staff and students alike. In total the volume contains 54 wide-ranging short essays by recognised experts covering both general concepts in cultural studies (e.g. body, deconstruction, postmodernity and queer theory) as they relate to Latin America, together with essays specific to the field (e.g. anthropophagy, deterritorialisation and lettered city). Undergraduates newly embarking on courses which examine the cultural traditions of the Latin American subcontinent may only be vaguely familiar with concepts such as postmodernity and diaspora, and possibly totally unfamiliar with alterity and transculturation. The volume should enable such students to gain a basic understanding of the topic and, with the help of the useful reading lists appended to each essay, provide the student with access to more in-depth information on the subject.
