The bibliography of space exploration, quite apart from the technical and scientific literature, is already vast: an encyclopedia of the history of space exploration in all its aspects, aimed at a more general audience - specifically in this instance senior high school and undergraduate students - is an enormous undertaking. Indeed, it was in 2002 that the publishers approached the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum on this project: they were referred to the American Astronautical Society whose History Committee formally agreed to collaborate on the project later that year.
