摘要

This book deals with the phenomenon of global organized crime. The world's organized crime groups have adapted over the last 20 years to the changing forces of globalization, the rise of the internet, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the dismantlement of Yugoslavia, and the end of apartheid. In 1996, former FBI Director, Louis J. Freeh, targeted global organized crime as a priority threat to US national security, and defined it as "a continuing criminal conspiracy having a firm organizational structure, a conspiracy fed by fear and corruption". Organized criminal activity can be found throughout most of the historical record and pre-industrial societies in China, Italy, and Japan gave rise to groups such as the Triads, Jakuza, the 'Ndrangheta, and the Sicilian Mafia. Organized piracy, highway robbery and banditry were precursors to today's global organized crime problems. The "world's oldest trade" is the slave trade which can be traced back to the third millennium, while the trafficking in women can be traced to at least the beeinnine of the Christian era.
