It is hard to define Historical Dictionary of Canada (2nd Ed.) by Barry M. Gough. Is it a history book? Is it a lexicon? Is it an almanac? In effect, it is all three. This guide to Canada leads the reader through the people, geography, history, politics, and resources that help define what Canada is today. This book "... presents the country, traces its history, takes a good look at the current situation, and offers some insight into the future" (p. vii). A lofty goal but one that is essential for the history of Canada does have a profound influence on its complex current situations. Even in the preface by the author, many of the situations that haunt the Canadian landscape are mentioned. For example, the use of the term to describe the original inhabitants of Canada has long been a problem. In Canada, we have used "Indians" at time or "First Nations" and even "Aboriginal Peoples". All have reasons for their use and exclusion. Indians, for example, does not include Inuit or Metis. Gough has decided to use Aboriginal Peoples as it is more inclusive. By raising this in the preface, Gough brings such long-standing debates to the forefront.
