摘要

For most of the peoples of the world there is historical, archaeological or at least mythological evidence to show that they moved to their present locations. There are however, a few groups who are so thoroughly entrenched that we have no evidence of them coming from anywhere else since the putative breakout of modern humanity from East Africa at the dawn of the Stone Age. The Basques who ambushed Charlemagne's rearguard are quite recognisably the same peoples as those who fought the Romans, and who were regarded as aboriginal inhabitants by the earliest Celtic or Iberian settlers in Spain. Similarly the Berbers of North Africa were there long before the Romans came. There is no evidence of their ever having lived anywhere else and, in spite of conquest by Vandals, Byzantines and Arabs, still form a large proportion of the population. What these groups have in common is that they maintain an existence in marginal mountain territories. The fertile and accessible lowlands were easily overrun by incomers. The older cultures survived in inaccessible areas which were too poor to be worth conquering.
