It was only seven years ago that the first edition of Historical Dictionary of Switzerland appeared, the 53rd volume in the then numbered Historical Dictionaries of Europe series. Previously reviewed in these columns by this reviewer (RR 2008/146), I did initially wonder, given the relatively short time interval, whether another edition was justified. Switzerland, after all, is one of the most stable countries on the planet and has not been subject to any significant political or other convulsions in the past seven years. One suspects that the new dictionary is partly the result of the availability and enthusiasm of the author of both editions Leo Schelbert. A Swiss national, Schelbert was a professor of history at the University of Illinois for many years and an author of several books on the Swiss immigrant experience in North America. He is also responsible for Switzerland under Siege 1939-1945 (Schelbert, 2000), the authoritative English language account of the nation's perilous neutrality during World War II. Schelbert, it would seem, has undertaken this new edition of Historical Dictionary of Switzerland after so short a time interval simply because he had the time and desire to improve and build on his earlier efforts.
