This large attractive book is aimed specifically at an American audience of "business people, educators, high school and university students, school teachers, tourists and virtually anyone who wants to know about Japan". However, it is not an ideal reference book and might be best suited for use as a text book for senior school students doing projects on Japan or comparative country studies. The bulk of the book consists of seven thematic chapters: Geography; History; Government & Politics; Economy; Society, including religion, women and marriage, and education; Culture, covering Japanese language, etiquette, literature, art, music, food, sports and leisure; and Contemporary Issues.
