摘要

World Income Distribution is a statistical compilation destined primarily for a commercial readership. If your firm is selling a product on a global basis and you wish to do some market research without going abroad, you will find it answers such questions as: "How many one-person households are there in Belgium?", "How many women over 65 are employed in Bolivia?", or "What does the average university graduate earn in Denmark?". It must be said that the book's title is somewhat more ambitious than its contents justify. I reckon there are approximately 200 independent countries in the world, but only 71 of them are included in the tables. As one would expect, all the largest and most prosperous countries are present: those absent include most of Africa south of the Sahara; the smaller Latin American countries; and parts of the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Even such a populous country as Bangladesh is left out.
