Can Ancient Egypt be succinctly portrayed through the lives of 100 of its people? This is Wilkinson's aim; to cover over 3,000 years of history by studying the lives of some of the everyday people of Ancient Egypt alongside its ruling elite. By dividing the book into seven sections covering the ten major periods of Egyptian civilization Wilkinson has been able to circumvent the fact that there is not very much evidence from the "people" during certain periods and that it is certainly not equally divided. What matters, however, is that he has been able to find the evidence. This approach is unusual and refreshing, providing a new insight into the history of a civilization that continues to fascinate, revealing ever more secrets and truths.
