Of the great Victorian women writers, Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) has probably not been accorded the credit and recognition due to her superb creative achievements. Recently the relative neglect is being corrected. The publication in 1997 of a slightly enlarged edition of The Letters of Mrs Gaskell, (Chappie and Pollard 1997), first published in 1996, was a sign of a serious reassessment underway. This was followed by Further Letters of Mrs Gaskell (Chappie and Shelston 2003). In 1997 Heritage Book shop in Los Angeles, California considered Mrs Gaskell's work to be of sufficient interest to produce Elizabeth C. Gaskell: A Bibliographical Catalogue of First and Early Editions 1848-1866 with Photographic Reproductions of Bindings and Title Pages (Smith, 1998). Smith's work contains a wealth of detail on the publication and reception of Mrs Gaskell's work.
