摘要

Economic geography is characterized by a relatively high degree of intellectual heterogeneity and diversity. This is probably a bare necessity for the sub-discipline given the broad set of empirical topics, methodological approaches and theoretical frameworks with which the field is engaged. It is therefore not surprising that a range of different handbooks and other reference works co-exist. Throughout the development of the field such volumes act as important collective focusing devices in an effort to summarize, critically re-examine and perhaps consolidate its state of the art. In doing so, handbooks are by default selective.
