When weighing the benefits of introducing a new material into the post-consumer plastics recycling stream, two critical factors must be taken into consideration: The reality of today and the potential for tomorrow. Although certain plastics have a more extensive recycling infrastructure in place, the vast majority of plastics in the U.S. are still going to landfill. The only truly recycled plastic items are narrow-neck bottles, and yet nearly 75 percent go to landfills. With this in mind, is it better for plastic destined for a landfill to be made from a depleting, non-renewable resource, such as oil, or from a 100-percent annually renewable resource, such as plants?
