摘要

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Washington), in 2006, Americans discarded nearly 31 million tons of food scraps, and only about three percent of that material was composted. This means that nearly 24 million tons were discarded in landfills or incinerators. Transporting food scraps to landfills results in carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions and methane (CH_4) emissions after being land-filled. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has identified increases of both of these gases in the Earth's atmosphere, citing human actions as the principle factors for the changing global climate.
