Lower Mississippi River ports may be less prepared for a terrorist attack because of a lax oversight of port security funding, a federal watchdog agency has revealed. The inspector general's office within the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) found that of nearly USD 108 million in port security grant funds awarded between 2008 and 2013 to five Louisiana ports between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, 73% remained unspent, according to a report made available in early January.
